How to Choose the Right Primer

Primers are applied before adding new paint to any surface. It is the foundation for any paint job after re-surfacing the walls. When applied, it will prevent any previous stains or colors from being visible. It can also be tinted to match the color you're looking for in your final product. There are different types of primers suitable for different paint jobs. We go into detail so you can select the best product for your needs:

  • Oil-based is MDF's go-to. It has been considered an industry standard for many years. They can be used on a variety of surfaces and will fade a stain, so it is less visible after the new paint is applied. They do dry slowly, and cannot be used on masonry. Prolonged exposure could be harmful in terms of chemical inhalation, so ventilation is key. Using a natural brush for the best application results.
  • Latex is great on softer woods like pine, brick, concrete, and unfinished drywall. It's a choice for on a wall that has been repaired because it helps even out the surface. They also make walls easier to clean. These are applied best with synthetic brushes.
  • Shellac primers are the best stain killers. They work well even on the worst water and smoke damaged walls. It's a great choice for wood, as it prevents tannin bleeding from knots. Shellac primers can also be applied to metal, plastic, and plaster. They're known for drying fast.

Any time you're applying paint or primer, the room should be well-ventilated to prevent any health issues. After applying primer, paint within a few days for the best results. The safest option is to call MDF Painting and get a free estimate!
