Tips for Nailing an Accent Wall

Accent walls have become popular in the last few years. The idea is to paint only one wall in a room instead of painting the entire room. Some use this as an excuse to splash a particularly bright or dark color and having the benefit of neutral walls to tone it down. It's also a great idea for testing a color before committing to the shade or having to re-paint if you don't love it. The pop of color acts as a focal point.
If you're revving up for spring cleaning, throwing away some outdated decor and replacing it might be the first step to the accent wall process. The best accent walls complement their interior by adding to the existing space and color scheme. Some prefer to go more of a color match route, so scanning the more prominent colors will give you an idea of what will work best. For someone who's into a more funky flair, look at color schemes that will show you what to pair together. For ideas on this, scan MDF Painting's Pinterest page. Red accent walls were the go-to in years past, but recently an array of colors have been used. Blue has been a popular option, with jewel-toned being the favorite over muted or pastel shades. Black is another possibility when used sporadically, the color exudes elegance and doesn't close up space. Bright greens and soft oranges, pinks, and purples are trending colors too. If these options sound like too much commitment, picking a shade that is only slightly darker or lighter than the original color is an excellent way to test out an accent wall.
After narrowing down the color selection, the next step is to pick which wall to paint. Ideally, the room in question would have a lot of light. It's a popular option for living rooms, bedrooms, and foyers. If you have a hallway or kitchen that is longer and skinner, pick the backmost wall. It will help open up space as your eye draws to the pop of color. Another twist on this idea would be to paint only the trim or the cabinets with the accent color. MDF always offers free estimates and will put up paint samples. When you finish deciding which wall will be your accent wall, give us a call!
