Wallpaper Removal

Wallpaper can have fun and bold patterns that showcase more personality than your typical paint job. However, patterns can look dated after a few years. Damage to the wallpaper can add unsightly details like bubbling or peeling. If the wallpaper is covering the majority of your walls, the task of updating can seem overwhelming. We've taken tips from all over and collected them here to help with this process. If you still feel defeated as you look around your home, our paint care consultant will come in and save you with a free estimate! If you want to attempt the project on your own, here are some helpful hints:

  • Time: Depending on how much wallpaper needs to be removed, this project could take more than a few hours. Set aside more time than you believe you'll need and don't make any weekend plans.
  • Prep: Between the wallpaper, the water, and the glue, this project can get messy fast. Have plenty of trash bags nearby and protect your floors by covering them. Remove any decor on the walls. Furniture should be removed from the area as well.
  • Process: The best method is to use a putty knife to separate the wallpaper from the wall without damaging it. Look for a corner or panel that has started to peel away and use this to tear off the wallpaper in large sections. If there are no visible tears, you use the knife to lift a corner or section. If the wallpaper is stubborn, use a sponge with hot water to take off the glue. There will be residue from the backing on the wallpaper. Just keep repeating the process carefully until the walls are clean.
  • Finish: After removing all the layers of wallpaper and glue, the walls may need repairs. Apply a skim coat and sand until smooth. It also removes any stubborn bits of adhesive. After this, your walls will be ready for new paint, stain or wallpaper.
