MDF goes above and beyond for customers all the time, but we went above and beyond when tested with Coronavirus.

InPaint Magazine recently featured MDF Painting again! Owner Mark DeFrancesco elaborated on the quick decisions and changes he made to accommodate our customer's needs. Construction was deemed an essential service along with home improvement stores in case of emergencies or weather. Here are some of the tips that have helped keep MDF strong and healthy during this unusual year.

Mark has always had a strong emphasis on customer needs. This year emphasized that it was more important than ever. Some people felt the need to take more pre-cautions than others, and we worked with each customer as they needed us to. Each crew sanitized to the best of their abilities, using hand sanitizer, masks, and disinfecting equipment often. MDF stressed that work could be done outside of the home, and many took advantage of that. With the use of virtual estimation, and painters remaining outside the house, MDF can be contact-free every step of the way. Step Ladder Saftey
2020-08-24T00:00:00.05Z
Info MDF Painting
Step ladders are probably the only ladder you have in your home. Use these safety tips to avoid accidents!

Using a step ladder is so common, people often forget the risks involved when doing so. But falling from a ladder could be fatal, so we advise that you use this OSHA compliance guideline to avoid accidents. The step ladders our painters and crew leaders carry typically come in 2 sizes, 6 and 8 feet. It's crucial to use the correct height for the task at hand. If you feel you might come up short, replace the ladder with a taller one instead of trying to balance and stretch. Don't add height with boxes or toolboxes and add an unstable element to it. Make sure the ground you set up on is steady enough to hold not only the ladder in place but your body weight as well. Do not try to ascend a ladder that hasn't been opened fully, or while carrying heavy tools. These could both lead to a loss of balance. Each ladder rung should have about 10-14 inches of space between each one, so there's enough room to firmly plant feet.
Make sure the step ladder in use is completely clean, without paint, primer, or stain spills. Using them the way they were designed, and not for extra support or a make-shift scaffold, is the best practice.

MDF painters will often rely on respirators while working with chemicals. These masks purify the air so we can breathe easier during job sites. They don't eliminate the risk of contamination. However, when used properly, they will reduce the risk of exposure to below hazardous levels. It's important to note that these masks do not supply any oxygen. When in use, the air must have an oxygen level of at least 19%. Any air quality that is considered life-threatening can't be fixed with an air respirator alone. If the chemicals you're coming into contact with don't have warning signs, such as odor or taste, be incredibly careful. If you feel like you cannot breathe, you're dizzy or light-headed, you're nauseous or think you can detect the chemicals, please seek fresh air immediately. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, contact medical help as needed.

How to Make a Room Feel More Cozy
2020-08-11T00:00:00.05Z
Info MDF Painting
We know that you can't control the size of the room. But we can paint it to make it less open and empty.

Feeling cramped in a small room is a common problem. If you have a place with high ceilings and an open floor plan, however, you might want the walls to feel closer. This can be a big problem in an industrial or refurnished space. However, it's a problem that can be fixed easily with paint. Using any or all of these tips will help you feel cozier at home:

Use warm colors. If you have been mulling over the idea of painting the walls a dark and bold, this would be the best opportunity to put it into practice. Think dark greens, deep reds, and striking turquoises.

Paint the ceiling. After picking the fun and bold color you want for your wall, use a similar color for the ceiling. It is common to add a percentage of white paint to the shade to blend the room together. Adding another color to the trim will help as well.

Scaffolding Safety
2020-08-07T00:00:00.05Z
Info MDF Painting
MDF uses scaffolding equipment to work up high on commercial painting projects. We stick to safety procedure no matter where we are!

MDF Painting works on residential and commercial painting projects. When painting, staining or repairing a home, our employees will utilize ladders for those hard to reach spots. When working on a commercial project, we rely on heavier equipment, such as a boom or scaffolding, to paint higher areas of a building. MDF sticks to the following safety guidelines to avoid accidents:

Any scaffolding equipment is inspected by a knowledgeable team member and approved for use before anyone climbs onto it. A second check will be performed by the person using it to be extra cautious. Any problems are reported to supervisors such as a Crew Leader or Customer Happiness Specialist before use.

MDF craftsmen will not use any damaged equipment, including scaffolds and other ladders. They also will not remove anything from equipment, unless instructed to do so from a supervisor.

Fall protection, such as guardrails and harnesses, are utilized to prevent accidents.

Our painters and carpenters will not use planks from scaffolding as walkways. Our crews come prepared with other equipment necessary for these projects.

MDF employees know to never intentionally drop equipment or other materials from scaffolding. They will also wear hard hats and be mindful of any falling equipment.

Any spills on the job site, whether on the ground or up high, are cleaned immediately, to reduce any chance of injury while working.

Painters and carpenters keep scaffolding equipment free of clutter. No one will stack this type of equipment on top of boxes or ladders to extend the height.

InPaint Magazine Talks Prep Work and Expectations with MDF Painting
2020-08-04T00:00:00.05Z
Info MDF Painting
MDF painting was featured in InPaint magazines article on prep work and expectations.

MDF Painting takes pride in their attention to detail and their prep work. It's these two factors that set us apart from other painting companies in Connecticut. Putting in the time to do each step right for each job we do is how MDF can offer a long-lasting paint job backed by a warranty.
Mark DeFrancesco explains that he sets expectations early when starting a project, regardless if it's painting, staining, power washing, or carpentry. Stephanie will send each customer an information packet as soon as she schedules your free consultation appointment. This packet includes color selection forms, insurance information, options for removal of furniture and other household items as needed with your specific job, and what to expect as everything progresses. Mark emphasizes that communication with the customer is the most important thing. When they know what's going to happen when the crew arrives to start work, homeowners will take it upon themselves to help as much as they possibly can. For those who may not be physically able to help, MDF offers to lend a helping hand and adds the necessary hours.
Our painters, crew leaders, and Customer Happiness Specialists are trained to spot potential problems right away and fix them before the job is completed. MDF strives for never-ending improvement in our work, which is why we ask for each customer's feedback. To see the difference in our prep work, communication, and finished product, call us for a free consultation today!

How to Make a Small Room Bigger
2020-07-28T00:00:00.05Z
Info MDF Painting
Paint using these colors to help add extra room!

Using paint strategically can help add depth and space to a room. It's not a Jedi mind trick, but it is pretty close. Some colors can really transform your space after painted on. If you're looking to make the most out of a small room in your home, look no further.

White is the most well-known color to help add light and breathing room. Eggshell or satin finishes will give you the best results in a smaller space.

Lighter shades of beige or taupe can give the same effect as white but with more warmth. It's a neutral background that helps soak up natural light.

Pastel blue is a popular choice. It can come in a variety of shades, which can be used to create a monochrome look. Consider adding different blue hues to the molding, ceiling, and walls for a wide-open look.

Blush pink has gained popularity in recent years for a good reason. This pastel can add a hint of color into a room without becoming overbearing.

Cool grey shades that aren't dark are both neutral and light. They can be a solid choice for an all-over paint job that will blend into the rest of your decor.

MDF always uses quality paint products to avoid any chalkiness. This difference will also keep your rooms looking bigger and brighter. This list isn't exhaustive, as bright, pastel, and cool shades of any color can help with a small room. Owner Mark DeFrancesco talks tips and tricks with drywall repairs!

The article is called PRO PICKS The art of the patch: 4 pros share their go-to choices for drywall repair.

Mark talks about his favorite products and techniques for the best results. The MDF team uses Sheetrock Brand Durabond 45 Joint Compound for general repairs. For more specific issues, they use more targeted products. For something like spider cracks, Durabond 45 will fill in the cracks, followed by Goof Off Goodbye Cracks. The payoff for this method is a fix that lasts longer, and paint adheres to better. For a sizable repair, Mark advises mixing the Durabond 45 with hot water and applying it like a skim coat. To prep for painting, our employees stick to either Sherwin Williams White Pigmented Shellac Primer or Zinsser B-I-N Shellac-Based Primer. "They both work really well. Shellac dries quicker and hides bleed-through," Mark explains. For a small repair, using the DAP Wall Repair Patch kit will be the best product. It comes with a 6" mesh square that adheres well to the drywall. When it comes to sanding walls and ceilings, he recommends Festool ETS 150 and DTS 400.

Laundry Room How-to

Make the most of your home! New paint can brighten your laundry room alone, but add some of these ideas to transform it!

Whether your home is large or small, I'm sure every homeowner can agree that you want to make the most of every room in your home. Laundry rooms are becoming more functional. With something as small as new paint and shelves, you can always turn this often neglected room into a whole different space.

Paint colors: Sticking to white and lighter shades will make the most of the light available, even if your laundry room is in the basement. Shades of blue are soothing, beiges or warm yellows will add a warm cheer, and light greys will add color but still feel neutral. Choose what complements your home and feels right.

Organization: Adding shelves and cabinets help keep your laundry products organized, but don't feel the need to stop there. Any other house items could be arranged there, or even be used as pantry space. Get creative with your needs!

Lighting: Overhead lights are out of the way and can be grouped together. This combination can add a cleaner look, plus give you more light.

Decor: Don't leave the walls bare! Hanging at least one thing on the walls makes this place more inviting.

Lifting Safety Protocols
2020-07-16T00:00:00.05Z
Info MDF Painting
MDF painters and carpenters want a safe job site! We go over the proper way to lift heavy objects.

As painters and carpenters, MDF employees often have to lift tools. They are cautious when painting on the job site to ensure a safe project. Before handling any lifting, they inspect it to make sure there are no jagged edges, slivers, burrs, slippery surfaces, or protruding nails. They know their physical limits and will ask for help to lift heavy objects. Before lifting, our employees always clean their hands to avoid any wet paint or oil accidents. These are the best practices:

Make sure you have a firm grip on the object before moving. If you need them, gloves can help.

Avoid placing your fingers near pinch points, like where drawers and doors meet.

The correct posture for lifting is easy to learn. Keep one foot alongside the object, while the other is behind it. Maintain your body weight over your feet, with your back straight. The best way to keep your back's alignment is to tuck your chin slightly. Tuck your arms and elbows in to your side and lift the object using your whole hand.

Staying close to it will help your balance. Keep your knees bent to help feel more comfortable. From here, use your leg muscles as you lift. Avoid twisting and turning. If you do need to turn as you carry, change your foot position, and make sure your path is clear.

When you set the object down, use your leg muscle the same way you did when you lifted it. Make sure the object is placed down securely before moving away.

MDF Christmas Party 2019!
2019-12-27T13:12:51.05Z
MDF Painting & Power Washing
A recap of our annual Christmas Party: good food, good company, and the award show!

The MDF Christmas Party has been traditionally a family affair. Our business takes pride in treating each person like family, customer and worker alike. With the holiday coming up, Owner Mark DeFrancesco had sugar plum visions of a sit-down dinner with Santa stopping by and a singer serenading the families, but it was decided to have a casual luncheon instead. Everyone dropped what they were doing to meet at a fabulous Italian restaurant.

After discussing holiday plans and traditions over garlic bread and salad, the main dishes were served. The staff collectively dived into vodka sauce penne, salmon with broccoli and capers, eggplant parmesan, and a Tuscan-style chicken dish. An award ceremony followed the delicious food. Newer staff were recognized for their first year of service. Older staff had been given the credit they deserved for their years of hard work. A special appreciation was given to 4 individuals on the team to highlight their dedication to the job.

Call center leader Stephanie Ramirez was awarded for her team-player attitude. Top salesman Jamie Guerrero was recognized for his leadership skills that go above and beyond the job. Crew leader Anthony Brennen accepted the Customer Hero Award for his work ethic and rapport with every client he works with. A special award category was created in memory of Ralph DeFrancesco, to recognize an individual who embodies a truly helpful spirit. Johnny Armijos, a key member of our carpentry team, was given this award for his commitment to our customers and his role in renovating our newest office.

We ended our celebration with coffee and cake! Our appreciation extends not just our staff, but our clients as well. The MDF family offers the warmest wishes during this chilly holiday season! May there always be room in your life to get together with loved ones and eat an amazing meal!

MDF is so grateful to the community we serve that we give back at every opportunity. This year, we brought back our tradition of making Turkey Dinner Baskets for those who need it most this holiday season.

Vice President Lisa Hollingsworth is no stranger to feeding those who need it. Earlier in the year, she was recognized for her on-going work with the homeless population in New Haven by organizing charity runs with food and canned goods. She brings her skills to the holiday table every year by lending a hand to pulling together dinner in a basket for those who may not be able to provide their own.

Lisa is not alone is this task, as one would imagine. Owner Mark DeFrancesco goes shopping for the supplies each year, giving the essentials to a holiday dinner for each family. This year, he was accomplied by Jamie when running to the food store and picking out the baskets. These basics include the turkey, stuffing, assorted veggies, rolls, snacks and dessert. Other staff, such as the salesmen and the customer happiness specialists, also take the time to volunteer with the basket stuffing and the actual handing out of every holiday dinner. This year, the office girls were proud to deliver a few baskets on their commute home. The tradition sparks such a grateful feeling during this particular holiday, many staff members sign up every year. Giving is an amazing way to feel at home within your community, and we encourage everyone to extend a service hand this holiday season!
